everyday vita: shoes and sorrento

  • On Saturday, we went to Pompeii.  The tour was hot, humid, long, and ... fun.  Our tour of Pompeii had every bit of potential to be horrendously boring (especially since I have the attention span of a fruit fly...). However, we had the coolest tour guide ever (shout out to Chelo!) who made the tour super interesting.

  • I haven't been to the beach at all yet this summer (talk about an insane farmer's tan...).  I finally took a dip in the big blue and it was awesome. I love walking around with crazy, salty hair.  I also love how my skin feels after taking a dip in the ocean. Fun fact: the magnesium in salt water hydrates and nourishes your skin.

  • We've been walking so much that my trusty old Tigers gave me the most insane blisters :(.  My boy saw me struggling and got me a pair of white Supergas here (you're the best). I've been wearing them for the past day and a half and no blisters yet! :)
  • I went to the Trevi on Tuesday and tossed a coin into the fountain -- then I learned that you have to throw the coin over your left shoulder or else it doesn't work.  Needless to say, I went back for a do-over.

  • You may have thought that I'd had enough with the crazy gelato flavors after my "tomato basil" experience.  However, I ordered another weird flavor yesterday: spirulina.  The gelato was bright, dayglo blue and it was super yummy.  Sometimes trying new things is good (except in the case of tomato basil gelato...)

  • Nutella. To. Go.  Enough said.  This was my lunch on the bus ride to Sorrento -- nutella, cookie sticks, and peach iced tea, all bundled together in a sweet little cylinder.  Lunchables just got owned.

If I buy 140 jars of Nutella, I can get this awesome nutella toaster...

  • The perfect breakfast = super crusty bread slathered in Nutella.

everyday vita: velasquez and vespas

  • We went down to the Tiber river -- it's beautiful at night!  It's all lit up with fairy lights and arcade games.  We sat under one of these big, white tents and ate cake.  Life is good.
  • Today we walked to the Spanish Steps.  Literally fashion paradise. I bought a big, straw tote bag and tied a fun, silk scarf to it to carry all my dictionaries and phrase books in.
  • I was killing it today in Italian class, we learned about foods and asked us to call out names of foods we knew how to say.  Farina, zucchero, cannella, arancia,  uova,  crema fresca,   (grazie Cavoletto di Bruxelles, you taught me everything I needed to know). #nailedit.
  • I just got my learner's permit before I got here -- but Mom, I don't want to drive a car, I wanna drive a Vespa. :)
my new wheels
  • Today, we went to a private museum collection and saw paintings by Rafael, Velasquez, and Caravaggio.  The difference between seeing the real thing and a reproduction is insane -- some of these paintings look like they're literally breathing.  (although maybe that was my cappuccino high...)

  • Gelato everywhere.  Some of my favorites so far are stracciatella, melone, and of course, Nutella.  Today I had a conversation with my Instagram friend Chiara about our favorite gelato flavors.
  • This morning, I had three cappuccinos. No big deal.  One at Sant'Eustachio, one at La Casa del Cafe, and one at the school dormitory in a plastic cup! Talk about a coffee buzz. Insanity. We went to the gallery right after and I was literally bouncing off the walls (totally inappropriate). My favorite place was Sant'Eustachio. They put a little sugar on the spoon -- yum.
  • We went down to the Tiber and had fries and chocolate cake by the river side.  Always a good, square meal ;).

  • One word. Foccacia. Oh my god -- I have a new favorite food. Bubbly, crispy, topped with rich olive oil, basil and tomato.

  • Also, pizza bianca. Cheese + Bread = simple perfection.

everyday vita: getting settled in

hehe I took that!

  • Cannella Vita finally has a Facebook page now! Go "like" it on Facebook to get updates and new posts delivered straight to your newsfeed! Click here for the link.
  • I'm taking this really cool class called Secrets and Symbols of Rome, we visit a church every day and look through all sorts of secret tunnels and stuff (like Indiana Jones).  But, apparently if you show your knees/shoulders angry nuns will kick you out of the church.  I stocked up on maxi dresses today (even though I'm more of a minidress girl). I guess once you go maxi you never go back-sy. ;)

  • I'm still getting used to the neighborhood.  We're exploring a lot, a.k.a going on lots of gelato walks.  My favorite flavor so far is melon and (of course) Nutella.  (Obviously not together!).  My goal is to try them all.  I think I can do it. ;)

view from the double-decker bus
  • We went on a double-decker tour bus of Rome today.  I sat on the rooftop and was a total little shutterbug (Rome is unreal at sunset).
  • I finally got an iPhone that works here in Italy! It really helps with the homesickness (thank god I can Snapchat again!).

oh baby
  • Last night my dad ordered pasta amatriciana (a Roman specialty with pork, pecorino and tomatoes) which was cooked perfectly, I got the recipe from the waiter at the restaurant (am I ballsy or what??) *sorry no pic, I'll make it for you all when I get home!
there are few things i love more than breakfast buffet
  • The espresso machine at the hotel was awesome -- you just put your cup there press what you want (latte, espresso, cappuccino, americano... you name it),  and after a few jingles it comes pouring into your mug like magic! (mom, if you're reading this, I want one for the kitchen)
reading my espresso
  • Speaking of espresso, I am officially addicted.  I love the design in the mug that it leaves after I drink it.  It reminds me of the third Harry Potter where they read fortunes in tea leaves in Divination class. (total harry potter nerd)
this little goober loves ciambella
  • Right after I stood up to make another round at the buffet, this huge pigion swoop down and took  my slice of ciambella!   It was fine though, it gave me the excuse to stand up and grab one of these doughnuts :)

Abbracci e baci (hugs and kisses),
