new series: recipe showdown

There is nothing worse than a bad recipe.  Not only is it an overall disappointment, but also a waste of time and ingredients.
Thousands of people claim to have the "best ever banana bread recipe" or the "best blueberry muffins ever"... but which is really the best? 
Is it the one on All Recipes with thousands of five-star ratings?  Is it the one derived by a famous Food Network Star?  Is it the one clipped from the back of an old church cookbook? Is it the one your next door neighbor made up?
I am setting out to find out which are the best of the best.

Here is how it's going to work:
  1. I am going to pick three highly-rated recipes.
  2. I am going to bake a half-batch of each recipe. 
  3. I am going to do a blind taste test on my mom, my dad, my friends, and anyone else who looks like they want to try a baked good. 
  4. I am going to take detailed notes during each taste test. 
  5. (Hopefully) the results will come to a common consensus.
  6. I will do a blog post including: links to the recipes that I tried, notes on each of the recipes, photographs and the full recipe for the overall winner. 
And now for the twist...
You can challenge me to a "recipe showdown." Let's say that I claim to have made the best coffee cake in town, but you know that your grandma's recipe is far better.
  1. E-mail me your recipe
  2. I will make it alongside the previous "winner" and we will see which ranks supreme in the taste tests.
It's kind of like Bobby Flay's Show.

I hope this new series will help you all narrow down the recipes that are really worth your time. The first showdown is going to be chocolate chip cookies.  I am putting America's Test Kitchen's Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies against Jacques Torres's Secret Chocolate Chip Cookies.
May the best cookie win.

  2. This is such a *great* idea, and I'm so excited that you're doing it! The thought had occurred to me to try something similar--high-anticipation flops really are the worst. Would you consider tag-teaming to get some more perspectives, come up with recipe lists, or tackle more recipes? (I've always wanted to kick-start a best-test project, but the project went the same way as, I assume, Winnie-the-Pooh does during wintertime...hibernation.) If not, though, no worries!

I am starting with two of the most famous chocolate chip cookie recipes out there: Jacques Torres Secret Chocolate Chip Cookie and Americas Test Kitchen's recipes. It would be so cool if you could make them both as well and see if we come to the same consensus!

julia's banana bread

I just woke up from one of the best dreams I've ever had.  At the moment, I am sitting on Amtrak -- rolling through miles of factory towns and burnt out buildings on my way to New York City.  As much as I love the city that never sleeps, I seriously needed some sleep. recipe showdown: belgian waffles

It's humiliating.  It's tragic.  It's the decay of Western civilization.
... and I can't stop watching it.


Ever since I heard that little, blond, 4-foot-tall toddler's famous catchphrase"a dollar makes me holler honey boo boo," I've been in love.
She's hyperactive, uninhibited, and foul-mouthed... and I'm kind of obsessed.


But since this is technically a food blog, I should be talking about food, not the "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."  I did a little research and the Honey Boo Boo clan has some *pretty* interesting dishes.
Have you ever heard of "Sketti"?
Spaghetti, doused with a sauce that is one part margarine, one part ketchup.
However, the most infamous Honey Boo Boo specialty is her "go go juice" -- a secret mix of Mountain Dew and Red Bull that gets her "go go"-ing for her pageants.  If you aren't familiar with "go go juice," click here.  Thank me later.

Did I catch your attention? Good.
This is a sinfully decadent, sinfully easy dessert with a sinfully rewarding response.

It's not the daintiest, nor the prettiest. As a matter of fact, it's basically a hot mess in a pan.
But you know what? Despite it's frightening appearance, people just can't keep their hands off of it.
I made this for the first time for my school's Winter Sports Banquet.  In the morning, I put it in the fridge, all wrapped up in foil with a big sign saying DO NOT EAT...


When I came back to get it for the banquet, some sneaky little devil had eaten half the pan.  I wonder who it was...
Was it the P.E. teacher, trying to get his chocolate fix before he had to teach another period of freshman Health?
Was it the librarian, trying to drown her sorrows due to the fact that no one checks out anything but textbooks anymore?
Was it that "innocent" little freshman boy from Baking club?
I'll never know...
